Getting There
Flying
Jekyll Island is located on the Georgia coast midway between Savannah and Jacksonville. Guests can fly into either airport and rent a car for the short drive to Jekyll. While each airport is approximately the same distance from Jekyll, Jacksonville is the larger airport and may have more flexibility in flight times offered and lower prices.
Savannah/Hilton Head International Airport (SAV) | 1 hour & 25 minutes away
Jacksonville International Airport (JAX) | 1 hour & 10 minutes away
Driving
Get in your car and start driving from wherever you are. There is an $8 entrance fee to get onto the island. Because Jekyll Island is a Georgia State Park, this “parking fee” helps to fund the island. Once paying, you are free to leave and enter the island as many times as you like for the day. If you leave another day and return, you’ll pay another entrance fee. If you remain on the island for the whole weekend (and why would you not?) you’ll only have to pay the entrance fee once. The island is quiet and roads are predominantly 30 m.p.h. roads, which makes for great biking and a quiet atmosphere.
getting around
Walking + Biking
If you are staying at our recommended hotel, the Jekyll Island Hotel, you are in the heart of the historic district with plenty to see and do. You will also be steps away from of all the wedding weekend festivities (welcome meet and greet, ceremony, reception). Staying here, you should be able to park your car once and not need it again until it’s time to leave.
Bike rentals are abundant on the island and a great way to get around and explore the attractions Jekyll has to offer. Jekyll is very small, 7 miles long and 1.5 mile wide. There are abundant bike paths and the roads are quiet and low speed. All this adds up to a wonderful atmosphere for biking on the island.
Uber + Lyft
It is challenging hiring a car through one of these apps to get around on the island. Because the island is small, ride to a destination on the island takes a only few minutes. Drivers do not patrol the island waiting on riders due to the short ride duration and low number of riders. Any car you may be able to hire will be coming from Brunswick or St. Simons Island, 20 min and 30 min away respectively. It’s not likely a driver will make the trek out for what is likely a five minute ride. Fret not, there are other options…
Hotel Shuttle
The Westin Hotel, located on the other side of the island, offers a complementary 24-hour shuttle to its guests. Leaving the hotel, you let them know where you want to go. When you’re ready to return, you’ll call a special number and they’ll come pick you up. Only the Westin offers this service.
Red Bug Motors
Red Bug Motors rents “Red Bugs” (golf carts) at daily and weekly rates. These “Red Bugs” vary in size from two seater to six person capacity. These usually rent out on the weekend so if it’s of interest, reserve your “bug” in advance. (The name references the first vehicles rented on the island in 1919)
Driving
Drive your own car or rental. As previously stated, the roads are quiet and low speed. There is plenty of parking at destinations and should all be free.
